FranKeymasterWhen should someone seek fertility advice or testing?
-
June 22, 2026 at 12:20 pm #8099
FranKeymastergreat question – Generally, individuals under 35 should seek advice after 12 months of trying to conceive, while those aged 35 and over should seek advice after 6 months. However – for LGBTQ+ people, you should seek advice and testing as soon as you are ready to start family building and you can see your GP as a first step to see if they are able to support with some tests and investigations

FranKeymasterCan i have treatment with the NHS? My partner and i are a same sex female couple and we need donor sperm

FranKeymasterYes – in some areas the fertility policy supports same sex female couples who are wanting to start a family. In England, ICB’s (integrated care boards) will have funding policies for their local areas and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland the policy is country wide. You need to check the policy in your area but usually there will be funding for IUI (intra-uterine insemination) and IVF. Funding for sperm differs though so it may be that you need to ask about that too.

FranKeymasterWhats the first step for me and my partner if we know we need to use a surrogate to start our family?

FranKeymasterThe first step is to find a fertility clinic that will be able to support you with the process and provide you with the steps, its also a good idea to look at organisations like Surrogacy UK who are able to help support surrogacy arrangements in the UK. They can also help to provide information on the legal aspects.
