Hi All, I’m new here. I’m 34 from North West England and my partner and I currently have no children. We started our fertility journey just over a year ago. Initial tests looked positive as no issues could be detected and I had an AMH of 30.9 and a AFC of 20. 10 follicles in each ovary. The doctor said I was a good candidate for IUI. We did three rounds with no success. My AMH was taken again and it had dropped to 22.9. My doctor said this wasn’t something to be too concerned about. So we did another three rounds of IUI, which again failed. I had my AMH and AFC done again in the last few weeks and it’s dropped again to 12.7 and my AFC this month was 6, five on my right ovary, 1 on my left. My doctor had told me that my chances are now greatly diminished. I was devastated by this, especially as no reason could be given other than that I’m ‘unlucky’. It made me feel ill advised especially after the first round of IUIs. As such I’ve moved away from the clinic I was using in the UK and I’m beginning treatment with New Life in Greece. Would be great to hear from anyone who has experience having IVF abroad and if anyone has heard of drops in AMH and AFC similar to mine as I’m still concerned there is an underlying cause yet to be identified.

FranKeymasterHi Faye,
Thank you for sharing this. Can i ask how far apart the tests were and if you are taking any medication as that can sometimes impact the results. Thats quite a big drop in AMH and AFC but the levels are still within the correct range for your age. I have seen AMH drop this way as women get older but it would be good to understand if there are any factors that might be contributing to it.
Best wishes,
Fran x

Hi Fran,
Thanks for coming back to me. The AMH and AFC that were 30.9 and 20 were in March 2023, The AMH which was 22.9 was December 2023. The 12.7 result was the end of June this year. So it’s quite a rapid and steep drop. No I’ve not been on any medication or had any illnesses or surgeries etc. I had another AFC test a couple of days ago (so day 4 of my period not day 1) and it had increased from 6 to 13. 7 on my right ovary up from 5 and 5 on my left up from 1. My doctor has suggested I take some estrogen tablets before I start IVF next month to encourage them to grow at the same time/rate.
My recent TVUS have revealed evidence of adenmyosis though. But it’s unclear if this is what’s impacting the above.
Thanks again,
Faye.
Many Thanks,
Faye.

FranKeymasterThats interesting – are you taking any supplements that contain biotin? As that can impact your AMH results. The AFC is much better though which is good news. Its not routine that the adenomyosis would impact your AMH or AFC. I would suggest taking something like Impryl – as that may help with egg reserve as its a supplement with the required amounts of vitamins and minerals and there are quite a few studies to show it supports conception.

The Pregnacare I’ve been taking does contain Biotin but only in small amounts?
I’ll look into the Impryl!
I do find it weird that my AFC went up from 6 to 13 from day 1 to day 4 of my period.

I’m taking Pregnacare that does contain biotin, but, only in a small amount. So not sure if that would have an impact.
I will look into the Impyrl!
I am very worried and upset at the moment. I don’t understand how my AFC can go from 6 to 13 from day 1 to 4 of my period. Although I am glad it went up.

FranKeymasterHmmm Biotin can affect the levels – not hugely but it can impact. I can understand how upset you feel – its an emotional rollercoaster to be told one thing then something completely different. All I can suggest is that you ask for the same person to scan you (some practitioners record and interpret things differently) and then make sure you are in full flow of your cycle. Maybe day 1 is a little to early for you and your body for a baseline scan. Maybe you need to be scanned from day 2 – 3 onwards – these things can make a difference as everybody is unique.
Here for you Faye x
